(Inflammation of the dermis below the coffin bone of the hoof)

In acute cases shows the hoof detaches from the bone putting more and more pressure on the sole.
Comes about from an over-rich, high protein diet (for example grazing on verdant spring pasture) and over-exertion. Call the Vet out early! Where the pain is acute: spend long periods in a cold environment (e.g. let the horse stand in a ditch) or spray the affected areas for an extended period (1/2 hr) with cold water. For bloodletting see vet.


Cover the horse up well; the animal should lie down; feed just hay and reduce the amount of water he drinks.
